Description
A PAIR OF CLUB-SHAPED PAINTED STONEWARE MEIJI PERIOD VASES (Japanese, Meiji Period, dated 1879) in Japanese taste. The periwinkle pale blue bodies are decorated with white chrysanthemums in relief with gold bands of swirling clouds. Made probably at Kyoto and decorated at Tokyo for export, the design vocabulary represents popular iconic motifs symbolizing Japan in the West.
