A Pair of George III Beech Wood Armchairs
A PAIR OF GEORGE III BEECH WOOD ARMCHAIRS (English, 1775) in the Louis XVI taste. The oval backs are carved with a chain and dot border and two carved roses surmount the crest rail at center. The padded armrests connect to curved supports carved with bell flowers and acanthus leaves. The bow front fluted seat rail has a carved central panel with a neo-classical urn. The chairs stand on four fluted legs, the front two of which have flower head capitals. The backs, seats, and padded armrests are upholstered in a later gros-point needlework depicting foliate scrolls on a red, brown, and black ground.
