Oval Cameo Brooch
An oval cameo brooch (English, 19th century) made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The blue on white jasperware brooch is housed in a gold setting with a spiral edge. The cameo depicts five winged children engaged in an initiation/marriage ceremony, the figures with veiled heads represent Cupid and Psyche. The design of the cameo is based on the “Marlborough Cameo”, an ancient Roman cameo formerly in the collection of the 4th Duke of Marlborough (now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston). The underside is impressed “WEDGWOOD” along with the single letter “J”.
